The origin of the word hamstring come from the word hamstrung which means to have been held back.
Why then do some instructors feel the need to control? Why would anyone feel the need to be in such a class? Lack of knowledge, awareness, understanding of what yoga is.
You may also find the achievements and progression decrease as you learn to just be in the asana and it is here, as the effort decreases that you find the joy.

True Confessions of a Yoga Teacher

We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are

Perception is a funny thing. I am often taken by surprise at others perceptions of me.  Both the good and the bad.  I recognize now that perception is also a mirror, and having this understanding can be as much a blessing as it is a curse.  I recently had a bio written for me, thru the eyes of a young woman whom I greatly admire.  I read this bio and thought, wow this is someone I want to be, strive to be yet do not see myself as such.  Yet it is me as she sees me and I am learning how many see me.
Yet, on the other hand, I have a few people out there who would baulk at that description.
One of my dear friends, who I  thought everyone liked.  Wow even she, I learned, has a few who see her in just the opposite way I do.  So who is right, or is there a right or wrong to it?
I have recently recognized that there are some people that I am not at my best when I am around them, these people, in my journey to heal, I have temporarily taken a reprieve from.  I say temporarily, they may decide permanently, but then again, that will be their choice.
I have found people in my life who I seem to trigger every pain button that have, thru no fault of my own, and they view me thru the pain body, which is at times a very ugly picture.  These folks have been very easy to reconcile with as I realize it has nothing to do with me and everything to do with where they are and where they want to be.
I have found people that drain me of my energy and really have to set up strong boundaries with them.  They seem to eventually see that I am not going to nurture their sad story and move on. There is a difference between having compassion and enabling.
My favorite are those that are an encouragement, both in the way they live and pursue their dreams and life and the way they have of encouraging others.
At one time in my life I was beaten down and surrounded either by the naysayers or those that drained me of my last bit of energy.  I remember at the time questioning whether or not I had a stamp across my forehead that said, Have a problem, share it with me!
I am fortunate in that now I attract very few people like that in my life.  There is the occasional lesson that needs to be learned and someone comes into my life to shake things up a bit.  But they are far and few between.  I believe that this is all a reflection of yoga.  What I like to refer to as yogamentals.
Why then am I so surprised when I see an amazing review written thru the eyes of one of my piers about me.  Once again it is the conditioning and part of what I strive everyday to overcome and leave behind.  It is part of what I am learning about myself as I venture out thru my project, See you on the mat!
My perception of these yoga teachers as I venture thru the metroplex, all have wonderful qualities, and have even found one that I want to continue to study with.  Just as there are many styles and ideas about yoga, there are also many different needs that each of us show up with,  That is what is so beautiful about yoga as it is today.  It can be modified and manifested into what ever it is you need today!
And once again, we each see things as we are not as they are.  So what does that tell us about ourself?  That at times can be the truly daunting part of inner healing. My teacher taught me that your reaction to others is where the truth lies.  That is often the hardest part of the lesson. And those lessons still come at me when I least expect it.  I could sit back and play the victim, blaming and finger pointing, but I choose to take responsibility for my own feelings and not play the role of the victim.  This in itself is very empowering and also very healing.
So the next time you find yourself in a tizzy, stop and look at the lesson.  You may not see it right away, but if you remain open, over time the lesson will be reveled and you can move a bit closer to healing.  Your time on your mat is a great opportunity for self discovery and healing.  The way you do anything is the way you do everything.
Set your intention to be open to receive what ever the lesson is for you today.  Is it to step up your practice or maybe slow it down a bit.  As you begin to approach your time on the mat as a journey of self discovery you will discover a whole new wonderful and beautiful you!  The change starts with you!
See You, on the Mat!
